Château de Vaux le Vicomte

The Château de Vaux le Vicomte is an incredible castle a short drive southeast of Paris, near the town of Melun.

On Saturday evenings during the summer, the castle puts on Candlelight Evenings, transforming a visit to a castle into a simply magical experience.

Even the moat is straight out of a fairy tale.

Sara has some incredible photos from this evening of the candles, and so does Out and About in Paris.   She also did an interview with the co-manager of the estate, a fascinating read.

If the château wasn't amazing enough already, it is also home to a 17th century garden picnic called "Journée Grand Siècle" -- something I would love to attend some day! The wigs!  The slammerkins!  ...some day, I'll be back.

Slammerkin? What, pray tell, is a slammerkin? I loved looking at your photos of Vaux le Vicomte. It's always interesting to see watch catches someone else's attention.

A slammerkin is the type of over-gown all the women at the picnic were wearing...the technical term is "polonaise" - but slammerkin has such a ring to it.

Actually, your pictures are far prettier illustrations of the two types you'd see---one where the underskirts and petticoats are the same fabric/design, the other where they contrast. Just like mix and match outfits one can have today, this allowed for you to have options in how to wear your garments.

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos! I think for me, it's a combination of what grabbed my attention and what I was able to get a decent picture of...between the light fading and the low light levels inside the castle already, it was difficult to photograph. Really, it emphasizes that a place like this is best in person. Sara has some incredible night photos, I can't wait to see more of them once she's settled!
